Exam Blueprint

The Three Stages of the Civil Services Examination

Success requires mastering objective precision, descriptive articulation, and personal temperament.

Stage 01

Preliminary Examination

Objective screening test held in May/June.

• Paper I (General Studies): 200 Marks (Cutoff decisive)
• Paper II (CSAT): 200 Marks (Qualifying at 33%)
• Negative Marking: 1/3rd penalty per wrong answer

Stage 02

Main Examination

Descriptive written test held in September (1750 Marks).

• Essay Paper: 250 Marks
• General Studies I, II, III & IV: 1000 Marks
• Optional Subject (2 Papers): 500 Marks
• 2 Language Papers (Qualifying)

Stage 03

Personality Test

In-person interview conducted at Dholpur House, New Delhi.

• Total Interview Marks: 275 Marks
• Evaluates mental alertness, critical assimilation, and balance of judgment
• Grand Total: 2025 Marks determines final rank
